Androcles and the Lion" depicts the moving encounter between an escaped slave, Androcles, and an imposing lion in a Roman arena.

"One day, all the Roman people were assembled in the great Circus, where a spectacle of animal hunting was to be given; finding myself in Rome, I went to the Circus; in the arena were seen a crowd of animals of prodigious size and extraordinary ferocity ; But what was most admired was a troop of enormous lions, one of which, with its monstrous size, its rapid leaps, its terrible roars, its protruding muscles and its floating, bristling mane, struck the spectators with astonishment and drew all eyes. Among the unfortunates condemned to fight for their lives against these animals was the former slave of a consular figure.
